What are mummy hot dogs made of?
Mummy hot dogs couldn't be easier to make! They're simply classic hot dogs layered with cheese and rolled in thin strips of crescent roll dough before being baked until golden brown.
Can I leave off the cheese?
Certainly! Mummy hot dogs are delicious with or without cheese. If want to use cheese but don't love pepper jack, try classic cheddar instead!
What can you serve with mummy dogs?
Classic hot dog toppings like mustard and ketchup are essential (ranch dressing and barbecue sauce would be tasty), but when it comes to side dishes, think: potato chips, fries, pasta salad recipes, or baked beans.
Help, I can't find a crescent roll sheet!
Don't fret! It's a new Pillsbury product that can be harder to find. And while it certainly makes cutting the strips easier, the mummies will be just as delicious if you use traditional (perforated) crescent dough. Instead of separating the dough into triangles, carefully unroll it into one large sheet, pinching together the perforations gently. Or, use puff pastry for extra flakiness. (Just thaw the pastry sheet according to package instructions first.)
What hot dogs are best for mummy dogs?
Although chicken sausage and "gourmet" hot dogs from specialty meats are certainly delicious, good ole regular, slender beef or pork hot dogs are best for this recipe. Jumbo hot dogs or thick sausage take a little longer to heat through, so stick to the classic hot dog for this recipe.
Can I make the mummies ahead of time?
Once rolled, mummy hot dogs must be baked right away. It's key for clearly defined "bandages." Baked mummy hot dogs can be reheated in a 375-degree oven until warmed through, three to five minutes.
- Yields:
- 8 serving(s)
- Prep Time:
- 15 mins
- Total Time:
- 30 mins
Ingredients
- 8 oz.
crescent roll sheet (or crescent roll dough)
- 8
hot dogs
- 2
thick slices pepper jack cheese
Nonstick spray
Yellow or honey mustard, for serving
Directions
- Step 1Preheat the oven to 375°F. Open and unroll the crescent roll sheet onto a cutting board, with the long side facing you. Cut 1/4- to 1/2-inch wide strips cross-wise (or across the short side—you need 24 strips total).
- Step 2Cut each slice of cheese into 4 long rectangles. Wrap one piece of cheese underneath one hot dog. Start with one strip of dough and wrap it around the cheese and hot dog like a mummy bandage. Continue with two more strips, pressing the end of the last strip together with the start of a new strip. Place cheese side down on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper and spray with nonstick spray. Repeat with all of the remaining hot dogs.
- Step 3Bake for 12 to 14 minutes, until golden brown. Let cool for 5 minutes before adding two little dots of mustard as eyes. Serve immediately.
